Myers-Briggs and Our Four-Legged Friends

I spent most of Tuesday working on a reflection assignment for my Intro to Christian Spirituality class. It was a five-part assignment, with the first part being an exploration of my personality preference type and how that impacts the way I relate to God and express my faith. I thought a lot about being an INTJ for just over 20 years of my life but having transmorphed into an INFP over the past several years, due to growth in some pretty foundational areas.

Did you know you could change personality profiles? That's pretty amazing to me. I noticed the text I was reading referred to them as personality preference types, which helped me make sense of how this could happen (and did happen for me), since your preferences can change as your values change . . . and my values have certainly changed in a slow process over the past ten years.

So, since I spent most of Tuesday thinking in terms of Myers-Briggs, it seemed only natural that I begin psychoanalyzing Diva when I came to bed that night.

What's that you say? You've never heard of Myers-Briggs? Oh. Well, let me give you a short primer. Determine your personality preference type in four easy steps.

E-I: Extroversion or Introversion. If you're a people person, thrive in group settings, and find yourself gaining energy when around other people, you're likely an extrovert. If you protect your alone time carefully and find you need it to recharge and regain your center, you're likely an introvert.

S-N: Sensing or iNtuitive. How do you take in data when you're interacting in the world? If you rely heavily on your sensing organs and gravitate toward tactile, kinesthetic experiences, you're probably a sensing being. If you've learned you can trust inner promptings, have a discerning spirit, or often feel the pulse of what lies beneath or behind the surface of reality, you can bet you're an intuitive.

T-F: Thinking or Feeling. This one's pretty straightforward. Do you rely on analysis and objectivity to process and make decisions, or do you find yourself more often delving into the subjective realm of feelings when you're making sense of things?

J-P: Judging or Perceiving. Do you like to bring order, discipline, and resolution to the world around you? If so, you're likely a J. Are you more comfortable with spontaneity, messiness, and the open-ended, ambiguous side of life? In this case, you're probably a P.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program. On Tuesday night, I got only so far as proclaiming Diva an introvert before she scuttled from the room to take up residence on the farthest corner of the couch in our least-used room. Go figure.

So the next day, I resumed the conversation, this time involving Kirk as Diva nestled between us in a cavern of blankets. What personality type, I mused aloud, is Diva?

Definitely an introvert. She runs from other people and only really trusts one person implicitly: me. I got stuck trying to decide between sensing or intuitive; her incessant paw-pawing of blankets and her obsequious need for my physical touch would seem to make her a sensor, but whenever I'm feeling down, she seems to have a sixth sense about snuggling into my side and offering comfort. We decided that last part qualified her as a feeler for the third category, which freed us up to declare her a sensor in the second category. And finally, since she cleans herself obsessively, keeping her paws daintily pink and her white fur spots like snow, and she also likes to sit at windows for hours at a time, presiding over the rest of the creation under her purview, we decided she must fall into the orderly judging category.

Final score: Diva = ISFJ

This was fun. Kirk decided to issue a challenge. Name me any animal, he said, and I'll determine their personality profile.

Sure. How about Christian the Lion?

This lion, as the video demonstrates, loves people. He's practically giddy whenever he's with his favorite humans. Extrovert, for sure. Sensor, too, given the way he loves to play soccer and lope all over the African terrain as the head of his pride. And he's definitely a feeler; what else but love could overtake his natural lion instincts to eat humans when he stumbled upon his former owners in the lonely desert? He also must be a perceiver. Give him a London flat, a church courtyard, an African plain, or a human reunion tour . . . he'll roll with any of those punches.

Final score: Christian the Lion = ESFP

Okay, another. Curious George?

Totally an ESTP. He loves going on adventures and meeting new people with the Man in the Yellow Hat, which makes him an extrovert. He's always exploring new things in the world around him, which makes him a sensor. He's into figuring stuff out when he discovers it, so he's a thinker. And he gets himself in lots of scrapes, which only make him smile harder; that's the mark of a perceiver. (For the record, I know Curious George is not a four-legged friend, but let's just roll with it. It's a fun game, isn't it?)

Final score: Curious George = ESTP

But what about Solomon?

That's easy, Kirk said. F-A-T-Z.

Aww. Poor Sollie.

For the record, we decided he's an ESFP. He positively comes alive when Kirk enters the room, and he gets lazy, sleepy, and mopey when he's left alone for too long, all of which indicate he's an extrovert. He's all about eating plastic bags, graham crackers, fortune cookies, cheetos, and cheese, and all those textures on his palette must indicate he's into the sensory side of life. Our Sollie's a little . . . slow, so we're giving him the benefit of being strong on feelings. And since he often lolls onto his back when we walk into the room, letting his belly hang out with no shame, and regularly clambers onto our chests with pine dust from the litter box powdered all over his face, we're gonna have to say that indicates a little more absent-mindedness and a little more messiness went into that boy's makeup. That's right; our boy is a perceiver.

Final score: King Solomon = ESFP.

But there's still one final question: What personality type are you, and why?

Hmmmm, I have a lot in common with your cat? I'm an ISFJ. People sometimes think I'm an N (but the secret, as an S, that over the years, my internal "library" of experiences to draw from has grown bigger, and I can access it very quickly. So, it looks like I'm intuitive, but I'm just quicker at doing the "S" thing :) ).

And, more and more, I look like a "P", mainly because low energy and other realities of my life makes maintaining "J" levels of structure in my life almost impossible. But, every time I read the descriptions of the total type, I'm still pretty clearly an ISFJ through and through.

I used to be ENFP (borderline E) and am now INFP. Does that make us Myers sisters?

INTJ/P.

Great big "I" on the front for me.

Evenly split between "J" and "P". I just gotta have 'em both, ya know? I wonder if it is part because I'm a home school mom. I desire a fair amount of order and discipline, but our daily routine has a lot of flexibility to it that I really like. If the weather is nice, we push morning math to the afternoon and take our read aloud books outside for the morning.

Have you read the psycho-analysis of all the Winnie-the-Pooh characters?

I'm an INFJ (me and, like, 1% of the world's population, or something like that). I go back and forth on the I/E and sometimes the J/P, but the NF is very solid. I almost always test INFJ, but the questions I have the hardest time with are the J/P ones..."but, I do both of those!" Actually, I'd like to take it again and see if I've changed, since my last score is...well, old.

Did you know you can change on the Myers-Briggs based on your life situation? I have a friend who tested ENFJ her whole life, except when she was in grad school. Then she was in ENTJ, because she was so thinking-focused. I think that's cool, because you can tell a lot about how you're doing if you know where you usually test and how you're testing at a certain point.

Eclexia, I hear ya. I see how that is totally possible. I pull from my old T-J resources all the time, even though I'm an F-P now. So interesting how we do what is needed in a particular moment or season. And I find it interesting, too, that besides the introversion in both of us, we're opposites!

Heather, we are totally soul sisters. The Myers part is just icing on the cake! :)

Hey, Erin -- I wouldn't have pegged you for an I. I think your humor and leadership of SoulPerSuit had me thinking you were an E. Good to know. Your even split between J and P makes total sense. And no, I haven't read the Winnie-the-Pooh breakdown. I didn't read/watch much of Winnie the Pooh growing up, though, so I'm not sure how much I'll "get" it. But (pardon my lapse in memory) is that the one where Eyeore lives? Because I'm totally down with the Eyeore-ness. He's so cute in all his gray sadness.

Sarah, I hate those moments when I'm caught on a question and don't know which one to answer! That's when the P in me feels too hemmed in. Hm. I just realized it's the P in me that also hates that questions like, "What's your favorite movie? What's your favorite line from a poem? If you could only pick 3 books to take with you on a desert island, which would they be?" Choices, people. I need choices! :)

That's interesting about your friend. I like how you put it: learning how you're doing by how you test in different seasons of your life.

life circumstances does cause shifts in how we test and fit into these categories yet as you've said they are preferences and thankfully we can adjust along the spectrum when we HAVE to....

sometimes I can even plan events beyond the moment (but I'd rather not:)

Di, you are so adorable. I really caught your drift with all the added letters emphasizing where you are and where you have been (and where Gracie is). Aww, Gracie. I love that precious pup. I just want to squeeze her face into my hands and give her a big kiss on the lips! :)

Ha, ha! Will have to analyze my horse and cat. I'm INFJ, too, Sarah. So there's a bit of company in that small minority. It's been awhile since I tested, but I bet I'd be the same. Christianne, have you looked at the Enneagram yet? It's been hard for me to pin myself down on one of the nine numbers. But I think it's a valuable tool.

Erin, thanks! Yeah, I wonder how long it will be until I get to that one . . . :)

Joelle, I would LOVE to hear your discernments on the matter regarding your cat and horse! :) And no, I haven't checked into the Enneagram. I've got another friend who keeps encouraging me to do that, too, and I just keep losing track of it. But now that you mention it, I wonder if something like that will be brought into this formation program I'm in at some point.

Cool, Jolene! It's always fun to find other INFJs. I like us ;)

And the Enneagram is cool...I don't "get" it like I get the Myers-Briggs, but some people really love it. It comes from a bit of a wacky place (either Sufi-ism or drugged out hippies in the 60s, depending who you read) but seems to hold a lot of wisdom, especially when used in conjunction with psychology. I'm a 6 ;)

Well, I enjoy the privilege of being in the minority of an I/ENFP personality. Yes, every time I've taken the test, whether abbreviated or expanded, I'm within a question or two of one side or the other of the introvert / extrovert dilemma. . . . It means I'm uniquely qualified to be a traveler and a chameleon, open and embracing whatever place or crowd (or individual!) I'm facing. A hint of E in another draws me out. Too much E sends me in. Survival mechanism? Perhaps. But it's fun to see the looks on the faces of people who have only begun to know me when I tell them I'm an I!

This is a really interesting post from the psychological standpoint. I decided i needed to discover a whole different scale for my personality type. Mine would be NUTZ.

I don't mind wearing that stigma, just think of all the things you can get away with.

I figure i will develop my own personality path on my way to enlightenment, once i hit Nirvana (where is that anyway, China? ha jus kiddin) Nirvana=money Christianne i ain't no fool. You come down from the mountain channeling Moses and start selling the Torah to the public as a peace offering between them and god.

There is a lot of money to be made as long as you tell the world you are possessed by the spirit of Moses and god requires a monetary sacrifice for these pages of enlightenment. And His wrath can never be appeases until i have a huge house and a new car.

Now what does that have to do with your personality test. Silly the personality test is free when you purchase the Torah, written by the finger of Moses himself. All donations go to appeasing the world from the wrath of God.

Oh the money to be made off of my twisted personality.

Nothing is sacred anymore Christianne, not even the Bible i am sick.

this was fun & very, very cute!!

i recently tested again, just to see if there had been any shifts. kirsten is still an ENTJ but of particular note are the following observations:

E: it has often been the case that i'm as close as you can be to the middle of the E/I scale without actually being in the middle. i don't know if they let you be there. you must choose. depending on the day, i can fall on either side of the E/I spectrum, but E is where i tend to land when i'm taking the test.

N: no real shifts for me here. always been a pretty strong N.

T: this one is interesting because i used to be an extreme, all-out, all the way, no-question-about-it T. i'm still very much a T, but have shifted closer to the middle on this one.

J: same thing here as with T. there's still no question that i'm a J, but if those Meyers-Briggs types are right, i'm a kinder, gentler J.

this was fun!! no i want to and psychoanalyze everyone. ;o)

Robin, that's pretty cool that you're both an E and an I, whatever the situation requires. I feel like I've definitely moved closer to the middle on my "I-ness," but I still desperately need my recharge time, as much as I love being with others and get energized in a group setting.

Tammy, I still shake my head in wonder at how you pull this stuff out of your head. That whole, "Silly, the personality test is your free gift when you purchase the Torah" made me laugh out loud. :)

Kirsten, I almost had you! For some reason, I was thinking you would be an ESTJ instead of an ENTJ . . . silly me. :) And I can totally see what you mean about shifting closer to the center on the T-J scales. I see that in you. I'm glad you thought it was fun! I had fun playing around with the kitties, and I totally found myself figuring out what different people were whenever I met up with them last week. It can really get on the brain! :)

Mccabe, you are so sweet. I echo your wish for a pet lion. Isn't that video of Christian as a baby lion the cutest? I love that picture of him in the kitchen sink. :) Too bad Justin vetoed the idea for you . . . I guess he wants Delilah to stay living and your mermaid castle by the sea to remain in one piece. :)

I think I am INFJ - but I am pretty sure that is not what I tested as the only time I ever took the actual test in college.

I've taken a lot of different personality tests - I find them fun. But, I always end of thinking the thing they cannot measure is the influence of the Holy Spirit. I think it is due to his influence that some of my answers on such tests could be perceived as contradictory.

When I think about the image of God being in Adam and Eve, I understand that men and women more acurately reflect God's image together than they do apart. I think they same could be said for different personality types. Each end of the scale represents an aspect of God's image, but it is when we find the perfect balance in the scale that we find godliness.

I dunno. Just a thought.

And, I find it quite charming that you assigned personality types to your cats. Isn't it amazing that even cats are individuals with personality?
